Updates from Whirlow

To Make an End is to Make A Beginning - final Whirlow blog for 2021

2021 is drawing to a close. As it ends, many will give a sigh of relief. Others will sigh for sadness - even remorse - as a year can end with tinges of regret and of loss. Some will look upon the dawn of a new year optimistically, with a sense of anticipation or even excitement. Where do you find yourself?

The prophet Isaiah talks of newness – the newness of things gone and past as well as that of things yet to be - a new beginning.

The words are strange. Sit with them for a while and see what comes to your heart and mind.

The dawn of each day is a new beginning for all of us. Alas, too often, we are caught up in yesterday or a fantasy future.

As we move from one year to another, from one day to another, we always have a choice.

We can join the song of the Seraphs (like angels) -

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory.
— Isaiah 6: 3b

That is, we can raise our voices so others’ attention is drawn and pointed towards our God.

Alternatively, we can dwell with those who do not praise; those who scorn, criticise and take offense, who - rather than welcome the dawn - prefer to stay in the shadows.

This is a choice made in every moment of every day and no individual can get it right all the time. We need the support of others. Together, we have freedom to choose day in, day out. Perhaps God waits for our response in each and every moment – patiently waiting, for as long as it takes, for us to choose the upward glance and redeem the time we have.

If it is true, as Christians claim to believe, that we are continually offered love, peace and calm as our own, why do we hold back? There must be perceived benefits of biding our time.

What are those, for you?

What might it cost you, to choose to be at the New Year’s Party rather than spectating from a scornful distance? How might it benefit you?

We close with a poem for your reflection and look forward to having you with us again in 2022! :
